Event lighting: what the service includes
RMHpro designs and operates the lighting for an event: stage lighting, lighting of the space and lighting suited to filming. The most frequent constraint is balancing lighting designed for the eye, the needs of the cameras and the brightness of an LED wall. All three are designed together.
What the service includes
Venue survey, lighting plot design, supply of fixtures, supporting structures, console and cabling, build and focusing, cue programming, operation during the event, then load-out.
How the configuration is decided
The programme determines the function. Lighting a speech, showcasing a music stage or dressing a reception space do not call for the same equipment or the same operation.
Filming determines the levels. As soon as a camera is rolling, lighting serves two masters: the audience in the room and the viewer behind the screen. Differences in brightness are reduced, colour temperature is harmonised, and front lighting is strong enough for faces to be readable on camera.
The LED screen determines the balance. A bright LED wall dominates the stage if it is adjusted on its own. Its brightness and the front lighting are set together, otherwise speakers become silhouettes in front of the screen.
The venue determines the rigging. Flown trusses or ground-supported structures, depending on the available height and the venue’s documented rigging points.
By type of event
Conference and general meeting. Even front light on the speakers, lighting of the lectern and the panel table, room lighting that lets people read documents. Compatible with filming. Conferences and corporate events
Evening event, gala and awards ceremony. Stage lighting for the key moments, colour lighting of the room, changes of atmosphere operated live according to the running order.
Product launch and opening. A reveal to be timed to the second: programmed cues, synchronised with video and sound.
Concert and show. Front, back and side light and effects, live operation or programmed cues, reading of the artists’ rider. Concerts and festivals
Architectural and space lighting. Showcasing a building, a set or a garden, generally in colour and at low power, often on battery when power is lacking.
What needs to be provided at the venue
- a) rigging points and their safe working load, in writing, or floor space for free-standing structures
- b) a power supply separate from those for sound and catering
- c) the possibility of darkening the room if the programme requires it
- d) the timed running order, to programme changes of atmosphere
- e) the venue’s rules on effects, haze and rigging
With sound and screens
Lighting is designed together with the sound system and the LED screen: same supporting structures, same power, same control room. The lighting plot takes into account the position of the speakers and the wall, and the lighting cues follow the same running order as the video. Frequently asked questions
Why is lighting for filming different?
The eye accepts differences in brightness that a camera cannot handle. A backlit face stays readable for the audience but becomes a black silhouette on camera. Lighting for filming reduces these differences without flattening the stage.
Does an LED wall interfere with the lighting?
Yes, if they are designed separately. An LED wall is a significant light source: it lights the stage and casts its colour onto faces. The front lighting must be strong enough to take back control, and the brightness of the wall is adjusted accordingly.
Is a lighting technician needed during the event?
As soon as the lighting changes during the event: moving from speech to music, an awards ceremony, a product reveal. Static lighting of a space can be programmed and left without an operator. The quote states what applies.
What needs to be provided at the venue?
Documented rigging points or floor space for free-standing structures, a power supply separate from the sound supply, and the possibility of darkening the room if the programme requires it. We check these points at the site survey.
